Artillery And Mortars

The 2S19 Msta-S is a 152.4 mm self-propelled howitzer designed and built by Uraltransmash, first in the Soviet Union and later in Russia. It entered service in 1989 as the successor to the 2S3 Akatsiya, combining the running gear of the T-80 tank with the diesel engine of the T-72. Its 2A64 gun fires 6 to 8 rounds per minute, 10 for the upgraded 2S19M2, to a standard range of about 24.7 kilometers, and it is operated by Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, Georgia and Venezuela. FAQs

How does the 2S19M2 Msta-SM2 differ from the original 2S19 Msta-S?

It has a new fire-control system, a longer L60 gun, 10 rounds per minute and up to 30 km range with standard shells.

The 2S19M2, also called the 2S33 Msta-SM2 and introduced in 2013, has a new automatic fire-control system that raises the rate of fire to 10 rounds per minute, against 6 to 8 for the original. It also has a new 2A79 152 mm L60 gun with improved ballistics that can use more propellant charges at a higher breech pressure. The longer, heavier barrel gives a maximum range of 30 kilometers with standard high-explosive fragmentation shells and 40 kilometers with rocket-assisted shells, compared with 24.7 kilometers for the original standard round.
