Winchester Model 1906

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Winchester Model 1906 was a .22 calibre slide-action takedown rifle made by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1906 to 1932, with a total production of about 729,000 rifles. It was designed as a cheaper companion to the popular Model 1890, differing mainly in its flat shotgun-style butt plate and round barrel in place of the 1890 crescent butt plate and octagonal barrel. At first it was chambered only for the .22 Short cartridge, but after about serial number 113,000, in 1908, it was altered to cycle .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle interchangeably to protect its sales. Winchester made three variants, the .22 Short Model, the Standard Model with a grooved slide grip, and the Expert Model, a deluxe version sold from 1918 to 1924 with a fluted slide grip and a pistol-grip stock that was a favourite of the children and cousins of Theodore Roosevelt. Official production ended in 1932, but a small number of rifles were assembled from spare parts until 1936. It is a civilian rimfire rifle used for sport and training, not a service weapon.
