The XM1100 Scorpion was an anti-vehicle networked munition system developed by Textron Defense Systems as a remotely controlled alternative to a traditional buried landmine, using sensors to detect and engage vehicles from a control station up to three kilometers away by launching one of four smart munitions to release a guided warhead onto the target. The system let operators switch it on or off remotely to avoid striking friendly vehicles, and the United States Department of Defense awarded Textron a 115 million dollar contract in July 2006, with the Army taking over the program in January 2007 and testing it successfully at Fort Benning, White Sands Missile Range, and Yuma Proving Ground. Funding pressure repeatedly threatened the program, and by 2013 the Scorpion was folded into the broader XM-7 Spider munition system of the Army rather than being fielded on its own.
