The Confederate States Navy was the naval branch of the Confederate States Armed Forces, established by act of the Confederate Congress on February 21, 1861. Facing numerical inferiority against the Union Navy, it pursued technological innovation such as ironclads, submarines and naval mines, most famously the ironclad CSS Virginia's fight with the USS Monitor at the Battle of Hampton Roads.
