Korean People's Army

Contemporary

The Korean People's Army is the combined military of North Korea and the armed wing of the Workers' Party of Korea. It has five branches: the Ground Force, Naval Force, Air Force, Strategic Force and Special Operations Forces, and is commanded by the party's Central Military Commission, chaired by the general secretary. The article says the force was created on 21 October 1945 from Koreans with Soviet Red Army experience, while North Korean historiography dates its founding to an anti-Japanese guerrilla army of 25 April 1932. It fought in the Korean War from 1950 after Stalin equipped it with modern arms. Its main adversaries are the South Korean armed forces and United States Forces Korea across the demilitarised zone, and by 2021 it was the second largest military in the world.
