The Polish Armed Forces, formally the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, are the national military of Poland, led under the Ministry of National Defence. The name has been used since the early 1800s. The Polish Legions and the Blue Army, formed from volunteers during World War I, preceded the modern force, and the Polish Army was recreated in 1918 from parts of the Russian, Austro-Hungarian and German armies. It expanded in the Polish-Soviet War of 1920. The German and Soviet invasions of 1939 scattered Polish forces into the underground, and after the war the Polish People's Army was aligned with Warsaw Pact standards. Since communism fell, Poland has adopted Western standards, joined NATO in 1999, served in Iraq and Afghanistan and modernised heavily. Five branches exist: Land Forces, Navy, Air Force, Special Forces and Territorial Defence Force.
