StuG III

The Sturmgeschütz III is a German assault gun introduced in 1940, built on a modified Panzer III chassis with a fixed armored superstructure in place of a rotating turret. It became the most produced German fully tracked armored fighting vehicle of the Second World War, with about 10,086 built between 1940 and 1945. Originally designed to give infantry close fire support, it was increasingly used as a tank destroyer as the war went on, and its comparatively low cost made it attractive to German industry even as the war situation worsened. It served on every major front, from the Eastern Front to North Africa, Western Europe and Italy.
