Carronade

Artillery And Mortars

The carronade is a short-barreled, lightweight naval cannon developed by the Carron Company ironworks of Falkirk, Scotland, and introduced into Royal Navy service beginning in 1778, designed to fire a heavy shot over a short range from a much lighter gun than a conventional long cannon of the same caliber required. Its short barrel sacrificed range and accuracy for a devastating close-range punch, firing a proportionally larger shot for its weight and requiring a smaller crew to operate, which let ships mount many more guns' worth of close-range firepower than an equivalent weight of conventional long guns would allow, and the weapon earned the nickname the smasher for the damage a well-placed carronade broadside could inflict on an enemy hull and crew at close quarters. Carronades saw extensive service through the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812, particularly on smaller warships and merchant vessels seeking close-in defensive firepower, before improvements in longer-range gun design gradually displaced the type over the nineteenth century.
