The Napoleonic Wars were a series of major conflicts from 1803 to 1815 pitting the First French Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte against a shifting sequence of coalitions that at various times included Britain, Austria, Russia, Prussia and Sweden. The wars reshaped the map of Europe repeatedly before ending with Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815. Estimates for total deaths across the wars, military and civilian, range from roughly 3.5 million to as high as 6 million depending on whether disease deaths and the war's exact starting date are included, and historians have not converged on one figure.
