The Battle of Antietam, also called the Battle of Sharpsburg, was fought on 17 September 1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland, between Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Union Major General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. It remains the bloodiest single day in American history, with 22,726 combined dead, wounded or missing, and it ended in a Union victory that gave President Lincoln the political standing to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
