Fought in 202 BC near Zama in North Africa, the Battle of Zama pitted Hannibal's Carthaginian army against a Roman force under Publius Cornelius Scipio, later called Africanus. It was the decisive, war-ending engagement of the Second Punic War: Scipio's legions withstood and neutralized Hannibal's war-elephant charge, then broke the Carthaginian infantry and cavalry, forcing Carthage to capitulate and sending Hannibal into exile.
