Hissène Habré

Modern

Hissène Habré was a Chadian rebel commander and politician who served as the fifth president of Chad from 1982 until his overthrow in 1990. A member of the Toubou people of northern Chad, he joined the FROLINAT rebels in the first Chadian Civil War and later led his own rebel force, the Armed Forces of the North. After serving as Minister of Defense in a transitional government, his forces overthrew President Goukouni Oueddei in 1982. With French and American support he opposed Libya during the Libyan-Chadian conflict, which ended in victory in the Toyota War of 1986 to 1987. He was deposed by Idriss Déby in 1990 and in 2016 was convicted by an international tribunal in Senegal of human rights abuses, receiving a life sentence.
