The Chadian-Libyan War was a series of military campaigns in Chad between 1978 and 1987. Libya and its Chadian allies fought anti-Libyan Chadian groups backed by France, with other foreign states and factions taking part from time to time. Libya intervened four times, in 1978, 1979, 1980 to 1981 and 1983 to 1987, while France intervened to support the Chadian government in 1978, 1983 and 1986. Muammar Gaddafi first sought to annex the Aouzou Strip, and later aimed at a client state in Chad and a base for influence in Central Africa. The pattern held until 1986, when most Chadian forces united against the occupation. Supplied with anti-tank and anti-air missiles, they routed the Libyan forces in the Toyota War and expelled them from Chad.
