Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Viscount of Turenne, usually called Turenne, was a French general and one of only six men promoted Marshal General of France. Born into a Huguenot family, he learned war young, serving first in the Dutch States Army under his uncles Maurice of Nassau and Frederick Henry before entering French service. He rose to prominence in the Thirty Years' War by taking the fortress of Breisach in 1638 and became a Marshal of France in 1643. He defeated Spanish armies at Arras and Dunkirk, overran much of the Spanish Netherlands in the War of Devolution, and in 1672 invaded the Dutch Republic before turning against the Holy Roman Empire. He was killed by a cannonball at the battle of Salzbach in 1675 and is ranked among history's great commanders.
