War of Devolution

Early Modern

The War of Devolution was fought between France and Spain from May 1667 to May 1668. France occupied large parts of the Spanish Netherlands and Franche-Comté, provinces ruled by Spain within the Holy Roman Empire. The name comes from the obscure Jus Devolutionis, a rule of inheritance that Louis XIV used to argue that these lands had devolved to him through his marriage to Maria Theresa of Spain. The French met minimal resistance, but Louis returned much of what he had taken in the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle of May 1668, agreed by Emperor Leopold I in January 1668 and reinforced by the Triple Alliance of England, Sweden and the Dutch Republic. The invasion ended the long Franco-Dutch alliance and began Louis XIV's wars of expansion in western Europe.
