Operation Barras was a British military operation on 10 September 2000 that rescued six Royal Irish Regiment soldiers and their Sierra Leone Army liaison officer held captive by the West Side Boys militia. Special Air Service and Special Boat Service troops assaulted the militia's base at Gberi Bana while the Parachute Regiment launched a diversionary attack on Magbeni; all captives were freed along with about 21 Sierra Leonean civilians, at the cost of one British soldier killed.
