Operation Entebbe, also called Operation Thunderbolt, was an Israeli counter-terrorist hostage-rescue raid on 3-4 July 1976 at Entebbe International Airport, Uganda. Israeli commandos led by Sayeret Matkal flew over 2,500 miles to storm the terminal where hijackers from the PFLP-External Operations and German Revolutionary Cells were holding passengers of Air France Flight 139. The 53-minute raid freed 102 of 106 hostages and killed all seven hijackers, at the cost of one Israeli commander, Yonatan Netanyahu, killed.
