Lorenz rifle

The Lorenz rifle was an Austrian rifled musket, a percussion muzzleloader designed by Austrian lieutenant Joseph Lorenz and approved for manufacture in 1854, becoming Austria's first all-new infantry firearm since 1842 when it was introduced by the Austrian Empire in 1855. High demand for the rifle exceeded the capacity of state arsenals, so private manufacturers also produced it, though with inconsistent quality control. It had a 37.5 inch barrel of .5473 caliber, slightly smaller than comparable British and American rifles of the period, a percussion lock with a muzzle-loading Tige breech system that was more prone to fouling than some alternatives, a beech or walnut stock, block or leaf sight options, and a socket bayonet with a distinctive quadrangular blade. It replaced the earlier Austrian Augustin musket and saw extensive combat through the middle of the nineteenth century, becoming one of the principal European military rifles of its era despite inconsistencies in production quality.
