The Franco-Prussian War, occasionally known as the Franco-German War and sometimes called in France the War of 1870, was a conflict fought from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871 between France, then under the Second French Empire and later the newly proclaimed French Third Republic, and the North German Confederation led by the Kingdom of Prussia together with its allied southern German states of Bavaria, Wurttemberg and Baden. The war ended in a decisive German victory that toppled the Second French Empire, led to the German Empire being proclaimed, saw France cede Alsace-Lorraine to Germany, and was followed by the uprising of the Paris Commune.
