Grossfuss Sturmgewehr

The Grossfuss Sturmgewehr was a prototype assault rifle developed in late 1944 or early 1945 by Kurt Horn at the Grossfuss company, better known for manufacturing the MG 42 machine gun for Nazi Germany. It fired the 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridge using a gas-delayed blowback action that redirected propellant gases to slow the bolt's rearward movement, letting the bolt weight be reduced to about 0.8 to 0.9 kilograms while still handling the relatively powerful cartridge. Only nine prototypes were built; the Red Army captured all nine near the war's end, five of them at the Kummersdorf testing facility, and a single incomplete example survives today at the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps in Saint Petersburg.
