Assault Rifles

This is a child group of Rifles and Carbines, collecting the Small Arms And Sidearms subcategory's select-fire, intermediate-cartridge assault rifles: standard-issue service rifles such as the Kalashnikov and M16 families and their many national variants, bullpup-configuration assault rifles, suppressed and underwater variants, and gas-operated and modular designs fielded from the mid-twentieth century onward. With 80 attested members this is the largest single rifle subtype in the atlas, reflecting the assault rifle's role as the standard infantry weapon of most twentieth and twenty-first century armed forces. Rifles chambered for a full-power cartridge in a fixed-stock, non-select-fire configuration are classified instead under this parent group's Semi-Automatic and Battle Rifles or Bolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles children.
