Experimental Model 2 submachine gun

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Experimental Model 2 submachine gun, often called the Type 2 in accounts of Japanese small arms, was a Japanese experimental submachine gun chambered in the 8 mm Nambu round and built before the Pacific war. It was designed in response to criticism of the awkward ergonomics of the earlier Type 1, and it offered a more conventional magazine feed and stock while keeping the Type 1 method of operation, a blowback action firing from an open bolt with the return spring wrapped around the barrel. Thirty round magazines were normally used. The Imperial Japanese Army tested it in the mid 1930s and rejected it. In 1944 its blueprints were sent to the Mukden Arsenal in Manchukuo, and Chinese communist forces later built a reverse engineered copy in .45 ACP, the Mukden Type 2, which saw limited use in the Chinese Civil War and the Korean War.
