Francisco Madero's initial call to arms toppled Diaz in 1911, but Madero's own assassination in a 1913 coup by Victoriano Huerta plunged the country into a wider war among constitutionalist forces under Venustiano Carranza, and popular revolutionary armies led by Emiliano Zapata in the south and Pancho Villa in the north, each pursuing distinct visions of land reform and social change. Years of shifting alliances and brutal fighting, including Villa's 1916 raid into Columbus, New Mexico, that provoked a U.S. punitive expedition, eventually consolidated power under Carranza and the 1917 Constitution, though political violence, including the assassinations of Zapata in 1919 and Carranza himself in 1920, continued for years afterward. The revolution killed an estimated one to two million people and produced the political framework, land reform principles and one-party system that would govern Mexico for most of the twentieth century.FactsMexican RevolutionConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStart YearWell-attested1910 1End YearWell-attested1920 1CombatantsWell-attestedAnti-Diaz revolutionary factions (Maderistas, Zapatistas, Villistas, Constitutionalists) versus Porfirian and later Huertista government forces 1OutcomeWell-attestedRevolutionary victory; Porfirio Diaz was ousted in 1911 and the Constitutionalist faction under Venustiano Carranza prevailed, producing the 1917 Constitution 1ClassificationDeath Toll MinWell-attestedfrom 1,700,000 1Conflict TypeWell-attestedCivil War 1Mexican RevolutionFilter Results9 entriesWeapon FamilyAllAmmunition and Cartridges (1)Bolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles (6)Pistols and Revolvers (1)Revolvers (1)Rifles and Carbines (7)Semi-Automatic and Battle Rifles (1)Weapon Type or ClassAllBolt-action rifle (2)Bolt-action service rifle (1)Breech-loading rifle (1)Semi-automatic rifle (1)Service revolver (sidearm) (1)Single-shot, falling-block, breech-loading rifle (1)small arm (2)CaliberAll.22 Long Rifle (1).30-06 Springfield (1).30-40 Krag (1).32-20 Winchester (1).357 Magnum (1).38 Special (1).44 Special (1).44-40 Winchester (1).45 Colt (1).45-70 (1)6.5x50mm (1)6.5×50mmSR Arisaka (2)7.7x58mm (1)7.7×58mm Arisaka (1)7x57mm Mauser (3)Introduced EraAll1848 (1)1850 (1)1867 (1)1873 (1)1890 (1)1892 (1)1897 (1)1903 (1)1906 (1)1908 (1)1912 (1)Service StatusAllRetired (9)OperatorAllArgentine Armed Forces (1)Australian Defence Force (1)Austro-Hungarian Army (1)Canadian Armed Forces (1)French Armed Forces (1)Imperial Japanese Army (2)Imperial Japanese Navy (1)Mexican Armed Forces (3)Royal Navy (1)United States Armed Forces (1)ManufacturerAllColt's Manufacturing Company (1)Remington Arms (1)SIG Group (1)Springfield Armory (1)Steyr Arms (1)BrowseCompareSelect all 9ArisakaMexican RevolutionColt Single Action ArmyMexican RevolutionMondragon RifleMexican RevolutionRemington Rolling Block RifleMexican RevolutionSharps rifleMexican RevolutionSpringfield M1903 RifleMexican RevolutionSpringfield Model 1892-99Mexican RevolutionSteyr Model 1912 MauserMexican RevolutionType 38 rifleMexican RevolutionConnectionsUsesArisaka, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: ArisakaColt Single Action Army, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Colt Single Action Armytier 2Gatling Gun, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Gatling Guntier 4Hotchkiss Mle 1914 Machine Gun, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Hotchkiss Mle 1914 machine gunM1895 Colt-Browning machine gun, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: M1895 Colt-Browning machine gunMadsen machine gun, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Madsen machine gunMondragon Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Mondragon rifle, WikipediaRemington Rolling Block Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Remington Rolling Block rifleSharps rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Sharps rifleSpringfield M1903 Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: M1903 Springfieldtier 4Springfield Model 1892-99, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Springfield Model 1892-99 (Wikipedia)Steyr Model 1912 Mauser, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Steyr Model 1912 MauserType 38 rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Type 38 rifleIn the Other AtlasesAlso in History Atlas: Mexican Revolution, the same subject.Sources1.
