The Great Northern War (1700-1721) was fought between a coalition led by Russia and the Swedish Empire for supremacy in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe. Tsar Peter I of Russia was joined at various points by Denmark-Norway, Saxony, Prussia and Hanover against the Swedish Empire of Charles XII, and the anti-Swedish coalition's eventual victory ended Sweden's status as a great power, with Russia gaining the Baltic provinces of Estonia, Livonia and Ingria.
