The Danish Defence, in Danish Forsvaret and commonly called the Danish Armed Forces, is the unified military of the Kingdom of Denmark, charged with defending Denmark and its self-governing territories Greenland and the Faroe Islands. It also supports peacekeeping and humanitarian aid. The article traces a standing military to 1510 and notes service in many wars, most of them against Sweden, including the Thirty Years' War, the Great Northern War and the Napoleonic Wars. Today it comprises the Royal Danish Army, the Royal Danish Navy, the Royal Danish Air Force and the Home Guard. The Minister of Defence commands it through the Chief of Defence, and the cabinet cannot mobilise it for non-defence purposes without parliament's consent.
