The Korean War (1950 to 1953) began when North Korea invaded South Korea; North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea was defended by a United Nations coalition led by the United States. The war ended in an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty, and the Korean peninsula remains divided near the 38th parallel. Estimates for total deaths, military and civilian combined, range widely from around 1.2 million to more than 3 million, with civilian deaths forming a large and disputed share of the total.
