The Type 96 light machine gun was a light machine gun used by the Imperial Japanese Army in the interwar period and through the Second World War. Designed by Kijiro Nambu and introduced in 1936, it fired the 6.5x50mm Arisaka cartridge from 30 round top mounted magazines. Unimpressive ballistic performance and reliability problems led the Imperial Japanese Army to try to replace it with the Type 99 light machine gun, though both weapons remained in service through the end of the war; about 41,000 Type 96 guns were built.
