The 9K333 Verba, Russian for Willow, is a Russian fourth-generation man-portable air-defence system, a shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile with infrared homing that NATO calls the SA-29 Gizmo. It was developed as a replacement for the 9K38 Igla. Its main new feature is a seeker with three sensors, covering ultraviolet, near infrared and mid-infrared, so that the missile can cross-check a target against decoys and resist countermeasures such as lasers meant to blind it. Its developer says it can engage fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles, and the containerised 9M336 missile can also be built into ground-based and ship-based short-range air-defence systems. The system passed state tests in 2011 and officially entered service in 2015, first with Russian airborne and ground formations, and Russian forces deployed it in the Syrian Civil War in 2017.
