The AEK-971 is a Russian selective fire assault rifle chambered in 5.45 by 39 millimeter, developed in 1978 by chief designer Stanislav Ivanovich Koksharov at the Kovrov Mechanical Plant and built around a balanced automatic recoil system meant to keep the weapon steady during fully automatic fire. In production since 1990 and in service since 1980, it is manufactured today by the Degtyarev Plant and has armed Russian military, law enforcement and Spetsnaz special forces units in the Second Chechen War and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
