The AO-38 is a Soviet 5.45x39mm assault rifle and derivative of the AK-74, designed by Peter Andreevich Tkachev at TsNIITochMash beginning in 1965. It was the first rifle to use the Balanced Automatic Recoil System (BARS), a mechanism intended to improve accuracy during automatic fire by counteracting recoil forces. The design approach was later carried forward into its own derivatives, the AK-107 and AEK-971.
