The Colt AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle manufactured by Colt Manufacturing Company, derived from a 1956 ArmaLite AR-15 design by Eugene Stoner, Jim Sullivan and Bob Fremont after Colt bought the design and trademark in 1959. Colt sold fully automatic versions to the Federation of Malaya and the United Kingdom beginning in 1959 and introduced the semi-automatic civilian AR-15 Sporter in .223 Remington in 1964, going on to build more than two million rifles under the name; production paused briefly in 2019 and 2020 before resuming as market conditions changed.
