Heckler and Koch UMP

The Heckler and Koch UMP, short for Universale Maschinenpistole or universal machine pistol, is a German submachine gun developed in the 1990s and entering production in 2000 as a cheaper, lighter alternative to the company's own MP5. It is built largely of polymer to reduce weight and resist corrosion, fires from a closed bolt using blowback operation, and reaches rates of fire between 600 and 750 rounds per minute depending on caliber. It is offered in three chamberings, 9 by 19 millimeter Parabellum as the UMP9, .40 Smith and Wesson as the UMP40, and .45 ACP as the UMP45, and was aimed primarily at American military and law enforcement use. Despite its lower cost and design improvements, the older MP5 ultimately outsold it. The UMP has remained in production and service from 2000 to the present.
