Type 19 155mm Howitzer

Artillery And Mortars

The Type 19 is a Japanese wheeled 155 mm self-propelled howitzer built by Japan Steel Works on a Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles HX44M 8x8 chassis, designed to replace Japan's ageing FH70 towed howitzers as a more affordable counterpart to the tracked Type 99 155 mm self-propelled howitzer. It entered service in 2020 exclusively with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, with about 70 vehicles ordered as of 2025, and reaches an effective range of 30 kilometers with standard ammunition or 40 kilometers with base-bleed rounds. FAQs

How does the Type 19 differ from the Type 99 howitzer it is compared with?

It uses the same gun design and ammunition but loads propellant charges by hand and is the more affordable of the two.

The two share a gun and ammunition but differ in chassis and loading. The Type 19 uses a modified version of the 155 mm 52-calibre gun used on the Type 99, with the smoke extractor removed because the gun is externally mounted, and it fires the same shells and propellant charges, so the effective firing range is very similar. Unlike the Type 99, which has an automatic loader for both shells and propellant charges, the Type 19 has an automatic loader only for the shells, and the crew loads propellant charges manually. This is the reason the Type 19 carries an additional loader compared with the Type 99. The Type 19 is described as a more affordable counterpart of the Type 99.
