The Kalashnikov rifle is the family of assault rifles descended from Mikhail Kalashnikov's original design, known in Russian as avtomat Kalashnikova. The first version, the AK-47, was produced from 1951 to 1955, and the family's simple design has allowed easy production and wide distribution, with licensed manufacture across many countries under Soviet arrangements. An estimated 72 million rifles of the family are in circulation worldwide.
