MP5 Submachine Gun

The MP5 is a German 9mm submachine gun developed by Heckler & Koch in the 1960s, built around a roller-delayed blowback action derived from the company's G3 battle rifle rather than the simpler straight blowback mechanism common to most other submachine guns of the period, giving it noticeably better accuracy and controllability in automatic fire. Adopted by German police and special forces and subsequently by a very wide range of military, police and counter-terrorism units around the world, the MP5 became closely associated with elite close-quarters units after the British Special Air Service used it prominently and visibly during the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege in London, an operation broadcast live on television that made the weapon instantly recognizable well beyond military and law-enforcement circles. Manufactured in numerous variants, including a suppressed version and a compact model, the MP5 remained a benchmark submachine gun design for decades, even as many frontline military users later shifted toward compact carbines chambered in rifle calibers for their greater effectiveness against body armor.
