The OTs-14 Groza, Russian for Thunderstorm, is a Russian selective-fire bullpup assault rifle developed in the 1990s at the TsKIB SOO design bureau in Tula. Work began in December 1992 under chief designers Valery Telesh and Yuri Lebedev, who built it on the internal mechanism of the AKS-74U carbine in a modular layout that can take an under-barrel grenade launcher based on the GP-25 and GP-30. The main OTs-14-4A version fires the subsonic 9x39mm round for quiet close-combat work, and the OTs-14-1A Groza-1 is chambered for 7.62x39mm. It was ready for production by early 1994, was adopted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and was then taken up by the Ministry of Defence for Spetsnaz and some airborne and specialist units. The rifle saw limited use in the Second Chechen War and the Russo-Georgian War before being phased out of military service, although some Russian police forces still use it.
