Patu

A patu is a short-handled Maori striking weapon from New Zealand, made from hardwood, whale bone, stone or the prized pounamu greenstone. Its name comes from the Maori verb meaning to strike or subdue, and it was wielded with a wrist cord attached, swung toward an opponent's head or body at close range. Patu were an important close-combat weapon in pre-contact and early contact-era Maori warfare, and surviving examples, often decoratively carved, are held in museums including the British Museum and New Zealand's Te Papa Tongarewa.
