Salvator-Dormus M1893

Machine Guns And Automatic Weapons

The Salvator-Dormus M1893, also called the Skoda M1893, was an Austro-Hungarian heavy machine gun designed by Archduke Karl Salvator of Austria and Georg von Dormus and manufactured by Skoda Works in Plzen. It was chambered for the 8x50mmR Mannlicher cartridge and used a water-cooled barrel with an overhead magazine, and its infobox gives a weight of about 20 kilograms and a 20- to 30-round magazine. An adjustable mechanism let the cyclic rate be regulated between roughly 180 and 250 rounds per minute. The gun entered production in the 1890s and was later supplemented and replaced in Austro-Hungarian service by newer designs including the Schwarzlose MG M.07/12. Austro-Hungarian forces used it during the Boxer Rebellion, including in the defence of the Austro-Hungarian legation in Peking in 1900, and photographs show it on both tripods and naval landing carriages. The source article carries a hatnote distinguishing it from the Salvator Dormus pistol.
