The SAR 21, short for Singapore Assault Rifle - 21st Century, is a bullpup assault rifle chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, developed by Singapore's Ministry of Defence, the Singapore Army and Chartered Industries of Singapore, later ST Engineering, over roughly four years to replace the locally built M16S1. Adopted in 1999 as the standard rifle of the Singapore Armed Forces, it was designed with features intended to make it easier to handle for conscript soldiers of smaller stature. It has since been manufactured by ST Kinetics and marketed internationally, including through the firm's American subsidiary VT Systems.
