Soman, also known as GD, is an extremely toxic chemical nerve agent that interferes with the normal working of the mammalian nervous system by inhibiting the enzyme cholinesterase. It was developed in Germany in the summer of 1944 by Richard Kuhn and Konrad Henkel, making it the third of the so-called G-series nerve agents to be discovered, and it was produced only in small quantities at a pilot plant at an IG Farben factory in Ludwigshafen, never being used during the Second World War. It is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations and listed as a Schedule 1 substance under the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention.
