The SR-3 Vikhr is a Russian 9x39mm compact assault rifle developed between 1989 and 1994 at TsNIITochMash by A.D. Borisov, V.N. Levchenko and A. Tyshlykov, based on the AS Val but without its integral suppressor and fitted with a folding stock for concealed carry. Manufactured by the Tula Arms Plant, it went into production in 1995 and entered service with Russia's Federal Security Service in 1996, though its high manufacturing cost kept it from being mass produced for the wider Russian military.
