T-90

The T-90 is a third-generation Russian main battle tank developed from the earlier T-72 and built by Uralvagonzavod in Nizhny Tagil, entering Russian service in 1992. It is armed with a 125 millimeter smoothbore main gun and protected by Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor together with the Shtora infrared countermeasure system, which is designed to disrupt the guidance of incoming anti-tank missiles. The tank has seen extended combat service, including deployment to Syria from 2017 onward in support of Russian operations there, and it has been used extensively, including its upgraded T-90M variant, by Russian forces throughout the Russo-Ukrainian War beginning in 2022. As the most modern tank in large-scale production for the Russian army through the early twenty-first century, the T-90 has also been exported to and licensed for production by several other countries, most notably India.
