The Type 64 is a Chinese suppressed submachine gun adopted in 1966 as a dedicated close-quarters weapon for special forces. It was built around an integral suppressor sleeve that threads onto the front of the receiver and shrouds the barrel. It fires the 7.62x25mm Type 51 pistol cartridge, a locally produced version of the Soviet Tokarev round, through a blowback action with a closed bolt. The bolt came from the Soviet PPS-43, the select-fire trigger group is thought to be inspired by the Czech ZB vz. 26 light machine gun, and these parts sit in a body taken from the Soviet AKS with its folding metal stock. It weighs about 3.4 kilograms and feeds from a 30-round box magazine. Because it used standard-velocity ammunition rather than a subsonic cartridge it was not truly silent, and heavy automatic fire wore out the suppressor faster than normal. The Type 85 of 1985 later replaced it in service.
