Type 90 Tank

The Type 90 is a Japanese main battle tank designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries with the Japan Ministry of Defense's Technical Research and Development Institute, entering service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in 1990 as a replacement for the older Type 61 and a complement to the Type 74. It weighs 50.2 metric tons, carries a Rheinmetall-derived 120mm L/44 smoothbore gun with an automatic loader, and is powered by a Mitsubishi diesel engine producing 1,500 horsepower, giving a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour. A total of 341 were produced between 1990 and 2009 for exclusively domestic use, and the Type 90 has never been deployed overseas or used in combat, serving instead in the defense of Japan's northern Hokkaido region and in joint training exercises with United States forces.
