The Type 92 heavy machine gun is a Japanese heavy machine gun related to the Hotchkiss machine gun series, entering service in 1932 as the standard Japanese heavy machine gun of the Second World War. Similar in design to the earlier Type 3 heavy machine gun but chambered for the improved 7.7mm rimmed or semi-rimmed round, it was designed by Kijiro Nambu, built by Hino Motors and Hitachi in a total of about 45,000 units, and remained in use by various forces in East Asia after the war for its reliability. Its name refers to the Japanese Imperial year 2592, corresponding to 1932 in the Gregorian calendar.
