The Burundian Civil War was an internal conflict in Burundi that lasted from 1993 to 2005, rooted in long-standing ethnic tension between the Hutu and Tutsi populations. It broke out after the country's first multiparty elections since independence from Belgium in 1962, and government forces, supported by international peacekeeping missions, fought a range of Hutu rebel groups including the CNDD-FDD and PALIPEHUTU-FNL. Both sides recruited large numbers of child soldiers, and the war killed an estimated 300,000 people. The 2000 Arusha Accords established a transitional power-sharing framework between Hutus and Tutsis, and the conflict is considered to have formally ended with President Pierre Nkurunziza's swearing-in in August 2005.
