Chinese forces launched coordinated offensives in both sectors and achieved rapid and largely one-sided battlefield success against unprepared and poorly supplied Indian defenders, advancing well beyond the disputed line before China unexpectedly declared a unilateral ceasefire in late November 1962. Chinese troops then withdrew to positions close to their pre-war lines in most sectors, retaining Aksai Chin but not the territory gained in the eastern sector. The war shattered India's prior assumption of peaceful coexistence with China, spurred a major expansion of Indian defense spending, and left the underlying border dispute between the two nations formally unresolved to the present.FactsSino-Indian WarConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStart YearWell-attested1962 2End YearWell-attested1962 2CombatantsWell-attestedChina; India 2OutcomeWell-attestedChinese victory 2ClassificationDeath Toll MinWell-attestedfrom 1853 1Conflict TypeWell-attestedInterstate War 2Sino-Indian WarFilter Results9 entriesWeapon FamilyAllArmored Cars and Reconnaissance Vehicles (2)Bolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles (2)Bomber Aircraft (1)Pistols and Revolvers (1)Rifles and Carbines (2)Semi-Automatic Pistols (1)Semi-Automatic Pistols of Asia-Pacific (1)Submachine Guns (2)Weapon Type or ClassAllArmored fighting vehicle (2)Bolt-action rifle (1)bolt-action, magazine-fed repeating rifle (1)Field gun / gun-howitzer (1)Heavy bomber (1)Semi-automatic pistol (1)Submachine gun (2)CaliberAll.30 carbine (1).303 British (1).45 ACP (1).45 caliber (1)15mm (1)37mm (1)40mm (1)7.62x25mm (1)7.62x54mmR (1)7.62×25mm Tokarev (1)87.6mm (1)9x19mm (3)9×19 mm Parabellum (1)Introduced EraAll1891 (1)1895 (1)1940 (1)1941 (4)1942 (1)1951 (1)1954 (1)Service StatusAllIn Service (5)Retired (5)OperatorAllArgentine Armed Forces (1)Australian Defence Force (3)British Army (1)Canadian Armed Forces (3)Finnish Defence Forces (1)French Armed Forces (1)Indian Army (2)Luftwaffe (1)People's Liberation Army (2)Red Army (1)United States Armed Forces (1)United States Army (1)United States Navy (1)Wehrmacht (1)ManufacturerAllBirmingham Small Arms Company (1)China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (1)Consolidated Aircraft (1)Daimler Company (1)General Motors (1)Ishapore Rifle Factory (1)Kalashnikov Concern (1)Lithgow Arms (1)London Small Arms Co.
