FAQs

Why was the DP-27 nicknamed the Record Player?

It was called the Record Player because of its flat pan magazine on top of the receiver.

The nickname came from its magazine. Military Factory says the light machine gun, sometimes known as the DP-27 or DP-28, was nicknamed the Record Player because of its unusual pan or film reel magazine, which sat atop the forward portion of the receiver. The same page notes that the gun was designed to fire only in full-automatic mode, and that its operating spring sat in a piston tube under the barrel, where the heat of constant firing could affect it.
