Eastern Front (World War II)

The Eastern Front of the Second World War was the theatre of war between Nazi Germany and its Axis allies and the Soviet Union, fought from the German invasion of 22 June 1941 to the German surrender on 8 May 1945. It was among the largest and most destructive theatres of the war, with military and civilian deaths together estimated in the tens of millions, and it ended in Soviet victory. The Soviet Union itself called this conflict the Great Patriotic War. No single commander directed the entire multi-year front; Georgy Zhukov was one of several senior Soviet marshals who held major commands on it, credited here for his central roles at Stalingrad and Berlin.
