The Maschinenkarabiner 42(H) was an early German assault rifle designed by Hugo Schmeisser and produced by C.G. Haenel from 1940 to 1941, firing the 7.92x33mm Kurz intermediate cartridge. Between roughly 8,000 and 11,800 were built and issued from 1942 to 1945, chiefly on the Eastern Front, and its design fed directly into the later Sturmgewehr StG 44 once German restrictions on submachine gun development were lifted.
